rynellPeople of my own heart!  I synched up with the team of First Descents at our Angels on 80 Happy Hour and fell in love immediately with the team, the cause and the tie to outdoor sports.  FD was founded by Brad Ludden, a Nike athlete and professional kayaker who took his passion on a larger scale by creating camps for the cancer community.  At camp, participants can push themselves to the limits through kayaking, rock climbing and other outdoor activities against the backdrops of Utah, Colorado, Wyoming and Montana.

Our very own Rynell Cook (Business Manager at IA and Ewing Cancer Survivor) hit the water last summer in Vail to meet other cancer fighter and survivors ages 18-39.  FD supports young adults with cancer, one of the most underserved demographics, giving them the opportunity to relax, mingle and challenge themselves to their own level.

Applications for next year will begin in January 2010.  Accepted applicants camp for free, with all athletic gear provided as well.  Stay tuned for more information on this group of movers and shakers, we plan to work closely with them!  Also, visit their webpage for more information on their programs, stories, staff, events and volunteer opportunities.  www.firstdescents.org

  1. What can I say? I had a such an amazing week in Vail with FD! I had the good privilege to meet some pretty amazing young adult cancer survivors! It was neat that we all came from different backgrounds, different cities and all had different levels of experience with outdoor sports. The one thing that we had in common was what all of us overcame: cancer. There’s no question that this program pushes you and encourages you to trust your body to do the thing you didn’t believe you could do!
